I think October is my favorite month of the year. Fall is without a doubt my favorite season and October really seems to kick it off right!
This is the month when those first hints of change become really noticible in the air. The evenings come to a close with a nip of crisp coolness that we haven't felt all summer long, the leaves begin turning gorgeous shades or yellow, gold, burnt orange, and blazing red! We begin pulling our long sleeved shirts and sweaters from closet shelves and storage trunks where they have been hiding since late last spring in preparation for the chilly nights ahead.
And October is the month when we literally see the fruits of our labors...or at least the labors of those who plant, tend, and harvest large gardens and orchards..come to maturity for harvest and are now ripe and over-flowing with delicious abundance! Pumpkins and other squashes are ready to pull from the vines, grapes are ready to press into juice, jam, jelly, and wine, and so many wonderful tree fruits...apples, pears, plums, cherries, peaches are all anxiously waiting to be turned into amazing and aromatic culinary creations!
October is the month when I want to make soups and stews from scratch and bake crusty loaves of home baked bread (I know! It's not RAW if it is baked! Well, that's what that other 20% is for!) I can't help it! I was raised by a mother who is a very gifted cook and I learned well at her side. Fall is the time of year when, more than any other time, I want to find myself in the kitchen busying myself with some domestic food preparation. I absolutely LOVE the smell of Autumn! The blend of fallen leaves and moist soil create an earthy fragrance that seems to set the stage and makes me want to light scented candles and simmer pots of spices and potpourri smelling of cinnamon, nutmet, cloves, orange rind, and apple.
There is a reason the people from Northern Europe and Scandanavia have celebrations beginning this time of year, when the days become shorter and the evenings more harsh. Somehow it all comes together to create the perfect setting for gatherings of family and friends, eating good food, sipping delicious hot or warming alcoholic beverages, and enjoying one another's company. This is the time of year that seems to define connection, reflection, and thanks-giving.
I hope this edition of our magazine will help inspire you to embrace the harvest time of year and create some wonderful, healthy, and satisfying meals, as well as building fulfilling relationships and nurturing practices for caring for your body and soul over the coming months.
Big Hugs and Blessings,
~Tracy
